Kommetjie – Residential architectural project
Tucked away in the heart of Kommetjie, this residential renovation transforms a modest home into a contemporary coastal retreat while preserving the quiet charm that defines the area. The project consists of a comprehensive internal renovation and addition to create a comfortable three-bedroom, two-bathroom home designed for modern living.
A key design objective was to strengthen the connection between the house and its surrounding garden. Existing spaces were carefully reconfigured and opened up to the outdoors, allowing natural light to flow deeper into the interior while framing views of the mature trees and surrounding greenery. Large openings and improved spatial flow encourage a seamless relationship between indoor and outdoor living, allowing the landscape to become an integral part of the daily experience of the home.
While the layout has been modernised to better support contemporary lifestyles, the renovation carefully respects the original character of the house. Rather than replacing its identity, the design builds upon it — retaining the warmth, scale, and sense of familiarity that made the home special to begin with.
Materials, proportions, and openings were considered to ensure the new elements sit comfortably within the existing structure, allowing the home to feel both refreshed and authentic. By carefully opening the house to its garden and surrounding greenery, the renovation brings new life to the existing structure while maintaining the quiet charm that makes it such a special place to live.
